Deep Cleaning/Scaling

If plaque isn’t removed from teeth, it will enable the growth of bacteria, which can irritate the gums causing them to bleed more easily.  This is typically the early signs of gingivitis, otherwise known as gum disease.  It is extremely important to seek treatment during the early stages of gingivitis because if left unattended, the condition can become more threatening to the overall health of the entire body.

During more progressive stages of gum disease, inflammation can break down bone support causing teeth to wiggle loose.  The good news, however, is that if treated early, this degeneration can be halted to prevent further damage.  Early detection is always the key to having a healthy mouth.  To stop gum disease from getting any worse, we would typically recommend a periodontal treatment, which is a deep cleaning.

We can discuss whether you need a scaling procedure, which is a process of removing tarter from the surfaces of your teeth, or if your situation requires a deeper cleaning. If your situation requires a deep cleaning, we will recommend what is called Root Planning, which involves smoothing the root surfaces and removing infected tooth structure.  In extreme cases of gum disease and gum pocketing, the gum pockets around the teeth might have deepened which allow tarter debris to slip down and under the gum line.

Depending on the current condition of the gums, we might recommend numbing them while performing such deep cleanings.  There are several methods of anesthetics that can be used to keep you comfortable during your procedure, which we will be more than happy to discuss with you.

The process of such deep cleanings might be broken down over the course of a week or so, taking different sections of the mouth on different days.  This method allows for shorter, more manageable appointments.  We look forward to speaking with you about how we may assist with the deep cleaning treatments you might need.
